When this egg reaches maturity (usually around day 14 of a 28-day cycle), it breaks out of its follicle and enters the fallopian tube.

The released egg has only 12-24 hours to be fertilized by sperm before it disintegrates. If fertilization does not occur within this timeframe, menstruation begins as the uterine lining sheds along with any unfertilized eggs.

To understand how ovulation works, we first need to look at some important hormones that play significant roles in this process: estrogen and luteinizing hormone (LH).

The main organs of the female reproductive system are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, and vagina. Each of these organs plays a vital role in the process of ovulation.

Ovaries are two small almond-shaped glands located on either side of the uterus. They produce hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the menstrual cycle and prepare the body for pregnancy. In addition to hormone production, ovaries also contain thousands of tiny sacs called follicles that hold immature eggs. During ovulation, one or more mature eggs are released from these follicles.

Once an egg is released from an ovary during ovulation, it travels through one of two fallopian tubes towards the uterus. The fallopian tubes have finger-like projections called fimbriae that help to guide the egg into its opening. Fertilization usually occurs in one of these tubes if sperm is present.

If fertilization happens successfully, then the fertilized egg will travel down into the uterus where it implants itself onto its lining. The uterus is a pear-shaped muscular organ that expands during pregnancy to accommodate a growing fetus.

How Ovulation Works

Day one of the cycle is marked by the first day of menstruation when the uterine lining sheds, causing bleeding. This phase is known as menstruation or the period.

Follicular Phase:

After menstruation ends, the body starts preparing for potential pregnancy by producing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone stimulates several follicles (fluid-filled sacs) in one of your ovaries to grow and mature over about two weeks. These follicles contain eggs that are waiting to be released.

Ovulation:

Around day 14 of your cycle, luteinizing hormone (LH) levels surge due to high estrogen levels from all the growing follicles. This LH surge triggers ovulation – when one dominant egg bursts out of its follicle and travels down towards your uterus through your fallopian tubes.
