President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared the termination of the 40 percent automatic deduction from federal universities’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

This announcement was made during the 75th Founder’s Day ceremony of the University of Ibadan, where Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, criticized the ill-timed policy implementation, acknowledging the challenges faced by universities.

Tinubu, as the Visitor to the university, emphasized his commitment to reforming the nation’s education sector for the sake of national development.

The decision to deduct 40 percent from IGR had sparked mixed reactions, particularly from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

ASUU argued that universities are not revenue-generating agencies, and the Committee of Vice Chancellors demanded a reconsideration, pointing out the lack of autonomy granted to universities.
