“Moses Bliss’s choice to marry a Ghanaian woman resonates with my own experiences in Ghana. Ghanaian women exude a warmth and ease of connection that can be refreshing compared to the sometimes transactional nature of relationships in Southern Nigeria.

In our part of the world, expressions of love often come with financial expectations attached. Yet, amidst the prevalence of what I call the ‘Industrial Money Obtainer culture,’ finding genuine love without the burden of constant billing seems increasingly rare. Marrying into this culture can feel like signing up for a lifetime of financial obligations, with little room for gratitude.

If Nigeria opened up visa-free travel to more countries, it might reveal a stark contrast in attitudes towards relationships. Southern Nigerian men, exposed to cultures where love isn’t synonymous with spending, might find themselves drawn to women who value connection over material wealth.

Already, Nigerian men are admired abroad, but perhaps it’s not just their status that’s attractive—it’s the prospect of a relationship untainted by financial expectations.

What’s needed is a cultural shift, particularly among Southern Nigerian women, to move away from the commodification of romance. Having traveled extensively, I’ve yet to encounter the same level of commercialization of love as I’ve seen back home. It’s time for a reevaluation of our values and priorities in matters of the heart.”
