Abuja Court of Appeal Confirms Governor Hyacinth Alia’s Election in Benue State

In a recent development, the Abuja Court of Appeal has upheld the victory of Governor Hyacinth Alia in the March 18 governorship election in Benue State. Titus Uba, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, sought to challenge the tribunal’s decision supporting Alia’s election.

Uba’s claims included allegations that Alia’s deputy, Samuel Ode, submitted a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, violating Section 182(1)(j) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

Additionally, Uba argued that Alia’s name was submitted less than 180 days before the election, and Ode was not presented to INEC after a party re-run primary election.

The tribunal, led by Justice Ibrahim Karaye, dismissed Uba’s petition, citing it as a pre-election matter and statute-barred.

In the recent appeal ruling on Monday, Justice Onyekachi Aja Otisi and the three-member panel held that Uba failed to sufficiently prove the forgery allegations against Ode.”
