South African Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu has called for a united front across political lines to combat the alarming rise in teenage pregnancies, with 90,000 schoolgirls becoming pregnant this year.

The Inkatha Freedom Party’s Zandile Majozi urged swift police action against sexual abuse culprits, emphasizing the distressing cases involving girls as young as 10.

Zulu emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among women from diverse political backgrounds to address this pressing issue. Deputy Minister Dipuo Peters expressed shock at pregnancies in 10-year-olds, stressing the importance of government intervention and collective action with communities.

The concern over increasing teenage pregnancies was echoed by various officials, including Acting Director-General Linton Mchunu and ANC MP Jane Mananiso, who called for police intervention.

The Department of Health’s Manala Makua highlighted ongoing interventions, acknowledging the crisis’s gravity and the need for coordinated efforts across sectors. Mchunu emphasized the role of adults in these cases, calling for the strict application of the law, particularly in instances of statutory rape.
